“It is with great sadness that we note the passing of our composer Emmanuel Nunes, who died in a Paris hospital after a short illness on September 2, just two days after his 71st birthday. He is mourned by his family as well as the music community, who suffer a great loss by the demise of this exceptional Portugese composer.
Emmanuel Nunes was one of the most important composers of his generation - and one of the most inventive. He succeeded in creating a world of sound exclusively his own but in which the echo of the near and distant past remain audible. Thus he achieved early on a synthesis between the most dominant movements in the music of the postwar era, represented by Boulez and Stockhausen. From the one he learned strict observation of the laws of harmony in composition; from the other his visionary feeling for large forms and acoustical phenomena in their whole complexity. But his musical roots go even deeper, discovering a unique balance between the polyphonic tradition culminating in Bach and the romanticism of composers like Schubert or Mahler. The listener discovers spontaneously this blend of expressive overstatement and constructive objectivity, on the one hand in the articulation of sound textures which are both sensual and spiritual and, on the other hand, in the step by step construction of a discourse made up of often abrupt rhythms, ruptures, enigmatic perspectives and a tendency to obsessive repetition. Sound and form move steadily towards the moment of revelation; they weave together the immediate happening and that which will be slowly revealed in the process of musical reflection. For Nunes composing is a journey of initiation - and that is exactly how the listener perceives his music. He embodies both the mystic and the Wanderer. The impression of richness in sound that one experiences physically when listening to his music - its epiphanic character - is accompanied by a fundamental restlessness, by a tragical feeling, a hand-to-hand combat with an idea. In each work by Nunes one can find nostalgic and utopian images transmuted into pure sound, they are embodied notably in certain harmonic combinations with quasi archaic character or in blends on tone-colour that have never been heard before. The vocal parts are self-liberated. This movement inside a vast and seemingly infinite universe of time and space determine the (generally long) duration and peculiar geography of Nunes' works, many of which require special arrangements for their performance. Here are no miniatures, no painstakingly worked tapestries in which the craftsmanship is an end in itself; not even a suggestion of ornamentation, effect or any inessential element. His work is hewn out of rock, monumental, tensed between heaven and earth. The works of Emmanuel Nunes are veritable cathedrals. The light which they radiate and which touches us, comes from a great distance andis like no other. -- Philippe Albèra
Many of his works have been commissioned by leading international organizations, especially the Gulbenkian Foundation and have been performed at important international music festivals and venues.
